Re: Pilot Program Request – Hawaii Stormwater Excellence Program

Dear Ms. Wedemeyer-Steele and Mr. Ramsey Ross,

The mission of the Department of Health Clean Water Branch is to protect the public health of residents and tourists who enjoy playing in and around Hawaii’s coastal and inland water resources. The branch also protects and restores inland and coastal waters for marine life and wildlife. This is accomplished through statewide coastal water surveillance and watershed-based environmental management through a combination of permit issuance, monitoring, enforcement, sponsorship of polluted runoff control projects, and public education.

The pilot Hawaii Stormwater Excellence Program is an approach using a public/private partnership focused on participants who will voluntarily develop and implement a stormwater management program with greater accountable self-policing procedures.

The Environmental Management Division, Clean Water Branch and Compliance Assistance Environmental Ombudsman agree to support the proposed program on a trial basis to be evaluated for effectiveness. Let me know the date of the first meeting and we will be there. If there is any preliminary work you would like the department to do before the meeting, please contact me.
